Working Security Robots Ensuring the Safety of Narita Airport! |
Did you know that robots perform all kinds of jobs at Narita Airport? In this month's newsletter, we feature three types of security robot that protect customer safety in the passenger terminals at Narita Airport. |
Their Inspection of Garbage Containers is Worth Seeing!
Autonomous patrolling surveillance robot [secom robot X-2] |
These X-2 security robots were introduced for the first time at an airport in Japan in June 2019 ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. With the monitoring of images taken from the cameras on the robots in addition to the patrolling surveillance carried out physically by security personnel, the combination of man and machine has paved the way in enabling a high level and more efficient means of carrying out security inside buildings. At present, there are two robots operating in Terminal 1 and two more in Terminal 2. |
On the day we were there, the airport was crowded with customers, but even then, the X-2 robots were carrying out patrols in fully autonomous operation. The robots inspire a sense of confidence as they safely move around customers in their path. While moving around the buildings they announce, "Security Patrolling". The red body caught a lot of attention, especially with children who were keenly interested in its cool appearance. |
Of particular interest in the X-2 is the use of an arm to inspect garbage containers.
When it arrives at the garbage container, it extends the arm which has a thermal image sensor to detect the presence of fire. People standing nearby are riveted by the process from start to finish. |

New Updated Version of the X-2
New Type of Security Robot with AI [cocobo] |
Turning now to a new type of security robot, cocobo, from Secom Co., Ltd., which was first introduced in Japan in June 2022. In addition to the functions of the X-2, cocobo is equipped with the latest technological advances, including artificial intelligence. At 125 centimeters high it remains unobtrusive enough to avoid giving airport users the sense of overbearing security. Its quick movement and round non-angular shape are kind of cute, but it has a wide variety of functions. |
If it detects long customer queues around check-in counters for example, it will direct customers to form another queue. Also, if it detects a suitcase or other unattended object on its patrol route, it reports this with a video alert while announcing the presence of the item to surrounding customers and asking for the owner to come forward. |
With a level of excellence that enables it to be used in a variety of situations, cocobo is also capable of providing remote guidance and abnormality alerts via LED display and voice. At present, there is one cocobo operating in Terminal 2 (as of 31 March 2023) but more are on the way. |

Cool Spinning Sensors and Futuristic Appearance
[SEQSENSE SQ-2] |
A short distance inside after entering Terminal 3 from the connecting corridor from Terminal 2, an SQ-2 waiting to recharge its batteries comes into view. Unlike the two types of robots, we have described above, the SQ-2 is 130 centimeters high and its vertical appearance is much closer to that of a human. Its small footprint allows it to be used in crowded areas and narrow aisles without disturbing customers. For that reason, it has been introduced into Terminal 3 where congestion can occur. |
A feature of the SQ-2 is its eye-catching sensors that revolve on top of it. The futuristic design is reminiscent of a robot from a famous space movie. The sensors on the top of the robot are 3D LiDAR sensors with spatial awareness which enables advanced autonomous mobility. The ability to detect objects in motion and pedestrians, as well as to automatically detect changes in the environment that differ from normal conditions, are areas where the SQ-2 excels. If you look closely at the body, you will also see a security guard symbol and the words, "TOUCH TO CALL". Placing your hand on this will connect you to the security center and enable you to talk directly with a security guard. |

Message from Tamaki Hagiwara
Narita International Airport Corporation, Security Department, Airport Operations Division |
Airports are unique venues where all types of people come and go. They require a wide range of responses and high security levels at all times to deal with incidents as large as terrorism or as small as a minor issue. Narita Airport will continue to combine the capabilities of people with advanced technology to enhance its security measures. |

Thank you for your interest in this article.
I visited a city overseas last year and saw working robots at a shopping mall next to an airport. Can you guess where this panda robot is from? (The answer will be in the next issue.) Thanks for reading. See you next month! |
